My first thought was to suggest a whippet as they are very fast and can easily snap up a rodent. I used one for ratting in dumps and she shadowed the scenting dachsunds like a big spider, snatching up bolting rats. I have never worked ground squirrels other than drowning some out for hawk food. The dog marks the hole, we ran a gallon of water in & the squirrel vacated. Made the dog bond to us. Also, if you have the oaks you'll always have acorns, and critters will come to feed on them, an unending cycle. If you use a dog for control I suspect they will dig after the rodents and your yard will reflect this activity. You might contact Susan Fuller, who has mini dachshunds and has lived in the west where there are ground squirrels: Rabdox@yahoo.com. A dog trained to work with a ferret might be an answer also as I believe a small jill could enter the holes and be of use in bolting the rodents. This would involve your involvement rather than just having a dog loose in the yard. Local animal control agents might give you ideas about getting rid of the rodents, unless you're just using them as an excuse to get a dog! good luckTeddynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964329604594247607.post-40473649551681638032010-06-06T15:51:00.622-04:002010-06-06T15:51:00.622-04:00This is very interesting as we have been consideri...This is very interesting as we have been considering getting 1 or 2 dacshunds for control ground squirrels in our yard. We have about 1.2 acres. We live in CA where we have several oaks that shed acorns. The squirrels love them. However, they have dug tunnels all over the yard. Do you think that dachshunds would help control the squirrel population. If so would you suggest a mini or regular size. thanks.Carole Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07050079545565153130noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5964329604594247607.post-57207828387216535992010-04-16T21:52:26.895-04:002010-04-16T21:52:26.895-04:00Thanks Doug.
