Pictures of ice storm in the North East

We live 20 miles south west of Albany, NY, and have witnessed first hand the ice storm of catastrophic proportions. When we went to bed on Thursday night we knew that it would be just a matter of hours before we lost electricity. Freezing rain and temperature of 30F caused a major ice accumulation; we lost power and cable (means to connecting to the Internet) at 3 am on Friday morning. When we got up in the morning the house was cold and dark. Outside everything was covered with ice, and it looked like glass was poured over trees, buildings and cars. Below there are pictures taken on Friday morning in our backyard - the fence (part of the fence became horizontal) and bench have grown long, drooping icicles.

Luckily we have a generator, which now is being put to a good use. Our coal stove and water pump are hooked to it, as well as a microwave oven and toaster. So we are warm, running water is on and we can cook some simple meals. To get gas for the generator we have to travel 25 minutes to Schoharie as everything around us is shut down. I don't know when we will have our power restored - it might be a matter of several days. Cable (tv and the Internet) came back on a couple of hours ago.

Today (Saturday) the sun finally came out and the scenery was breath taking. Enjoy!
