There are many subspecies of whitetails and this generalization does not cover them all. Northern whitetails develop good reserves of body fat in the fall and they tolerate temperatures as low as -40F for sustained periods. However they need evergreen-sheltered bedding areas, If the snow gets over 4 feet deep for sustained periods they cannot move around to feed upon browse, and then they starve in late winter.
