Hedge, a mini longhaired dachshund bred for hunting by Teddy Moritz is a Field Champion now

Readers of this blog are familiar with Teddy Moritz and her mini longhaired dachshunds.

Here is FC Hedge Threader von Moritz, ten months old. She was in four field trials and got four Firsts, three Best Opens and one Absolute. Better yet, she worked under the hawk for the first time today and helped push this rabbit to the bird.

Hedge is tenth generation field champion. Chuck Sprung put the first four field champions on his line, all bitches, and Teddy continued through her bitch line the next six. It does not get better than that!

Back from New Jersey field trials and getting ready for Sandy's arrival

I spent Saturday and Sunday at dachshund field trials in New Jersey, and just back this evening. Now it is time to get ready for Sandy. Here by Albany, NY, we are supposed to get some gusty winds and 2-4 inches of rain, which is nothing too serious. Our thoughts are with our friends living in the areas that will suffer much more severe impact. We hope everybody stays safe.

I am just too tired to post anything tonight, and will try to catch up over the next few days, if we don't lose power. So I am going to close this short post with a picture taken on Saturday in New Jersey. It shows our friend Teddy Moritz with her new Harris Hawk. It was great to see you Teddy!

The picture says it all - mini longhaired hunting puppies

I absolutely love this picture, which we received from Teddy Moritz, a falconer and breeder of mini longhaired dachshunds for hunting.  She wrote: My bitch Garmin whelped these four pups a week ago.  Their sire is a dynamic little hunter named Rhett who is out of my Bane and Lorraine Simmons' Darter. All the pups, two males, two females, are going to falconers. They ought to be pretty good hunters. Thought you'd enjoy the picture.

A mini long dachshund puppy Reilly benefits from an older dog's experience

Teddy Moritz wrote recently "I sold a pup to a Canadian falconer and he has successfully introduced her to hawking. He has an eleven-year-old miniature longhaired I sold him, a dapple called Emmie. She has taught the new pup, Reilly, about rabbits and field behavior. The falconer, Steve Dickson, sent this photo early in the season. Nice when a pup works out well."

Can dachshunds climb trees?

In the previous post we saw Remi tracking though the rocky terrain, and this time we got a picture of a mini longhair dachshund climbing trees. This one came from Teddy Moritz, and it has this caption:

Gripper (Harris Hawk) and the dogs were pursuing a squirrel today and Bane took it upon himself to try to help Gripper. I couldn't get the camera out quick enough to catch him all the way out to the end of that trunk, I just got him coming back. Gripper did get the squirrel.

Quarry that doesn't have antlers or hooves

Hawking with Teddy Moritz - hunt hard, kill swiftly, waste nothing, offer no apologies

In the United States dachshunds come in two sizes (minis and standards) and three coat varieties (smooth, wirehaired and longhaired). Teddy Moritz from Rockaway, NJ whose bumper sticker says "hunt hard, kill swiftly, waste nothing, offer no apologies" is a falconer, and she uses her pack of minis to hunt rabbits.
