Team work at its best: Deer Search's Jagdterrier and Dachshund recover a bear

We received a note and a bunch of really nice pictures from Pete Martin, a Deer Search member who tracks with a seven-month-old Lisa von Moosbach-Zuzelek, Billy's daughter.

Pete writes: "On October 5, 2012 Marc Niad with Jagdterrier Dakota and Pete Martin with Dachshund Lisa recovered a black bear for a hunter in Orange County in the town of Monroe. The bear was shot from a tree stand about 20 yards away. The bear circled in a loop about 50 yards and took off through a swamp. Both dogs were side by side scenting the bear. We worked well together as a team. This was the hunter's first bear with a bow after hunting 30 plus years. Congratulations Jerry."

Marc Niad and his Jagdterrier Dakota - a successful blood tracking team from NY

Marc Niad, who is a member of Deer Search and United Blood Trackers, had a terrific blood tracking season. He and his Jagdterrier Dakota found 10 deer, and some of the recoveries are pictured below. He went on 26 calls; 9 calls involved bow-shot deer from Westchester County.

The German Jagdterrier is a very versatile terrier, which was developed with tracking ability in mind, and Dakota is proving it. Congratulations to Marc and Dakota on their successful tracking season!

A gut-shot deer found four days after the shot

When John referred this call to Mike Garrity from Deer Search, he thought that it was very likely that the deer was dead. Mike and his wirehaired dachshund Wolfie found the buck four days after the shot. This is what Mike wrote:

Mike Garrity with Wolfie who air scented the four-day-old decomposing buck.
It took all of 10 minutes for Wolfie to air scent this large 9 point buck, shot on Saturday, October 2, the second day of the Long Island bow season. Unfortunately, they had to call in the dogs 4 days later due to a gut shot. The hunter Howie Habberstad, and partner Kate are seen pictured with Mike Garrity and his dachshund Wolfie.  Expectations were low for a blood line search due to a substantial rain storm the day before. Apparently the deer made his way back, close to where he was shot near a corn field some time after the initial search. The horns were salvaged and a cape will be provided by taxidermist Dave at Fish and Wildlife Unlimited in Bohemia. It will be another in a long line of impressive trophies for Howie. Also present was Louie Dibiase and his terrier Hunter.

PS. Wolfie was bred by Dale Clifford; he is out of Jessie v Moosbach-Zuzelek "Sabrina" and Henri Anons.

Deer Search's tracking team - Dachshund and Jagdterrier

We got this note from Pete Martin, a Deer Search handler, who tracks with Lisa (Lisa v Moosbach-Zuzelek):

I have been helping a new Deer Search member from Yorktown Heights, NY, become certified. His name is Marc Niad; and this was his third call with me. It was also his first find handling my dog Lisa. On our first call, his jagdterrier, 1 1/2 yr. old Dakota, was lead dog on a 22 hr. old track. He did an impressive job recovering a buck hit through both front legs that we tracked for a mile and found still still alive (he was dispatched). This 8pt. buck was also still alive after 27 hours, shot through both back legs. We have plans in place to track on Long Island this weekend.
